Linda Derrick
I am intrigued and troubled by the impermanence of our lives; here today, gone tomorrow. I love to record the clutter, the stuff with which we surround ourselves, for which we strive and ultimately leave behind. I find still lives poignant, showing evidence of life but no life itself.
I also like to paint landscapes, the world untouched by people, which will re assert itself as soon as we are gone. Weeds crack the concrete and a new ecosystem is built in places where humans cease to be. There is scarcely a trace of the dinosaurs who once lived where we live now. Perhaps 64 million years from now, some unimagined life form will dominate this planet to whom we are almost a myth- just a few bones (and plastic bags?) to confirm our presence.
Life is a strange thing for which there seems to be no plausible explanation. The universe is silent despite the noise in our heads. I paint the streets where I live, buildings, cars, passersby. I want to preserve and record, to anchor things in the flow of time. I am afraid that we are like the dinosaurs- just another short, inexplicable chapter in the history of the earth.
