Urban Portraits

Many times, I have imagined myself visiting vast landscapes full of colourful trees and crystalline leafy plants with beautiful white, orange and red flowers on them, surrounded by blue and black butterflies that dance to the music of singing birds sitting in trees while waterfalls crash onto rocks in the clear running waters of a nearby river. I have dreamt of flying within these beautiful landscapes since my childhood. However, I never found myself with an opportunity that would allow me to live this dream in reality as I grew up in an urban environment and always found myself too far from such serenity.

No doubt, I have always been a lover of beauty, and perhaps due to my sensitive nature, I understood my limits.

So I learnt to cherish and be thankful for whatever came my way. I wanted to do the best with what I was given. This taught me to see the beauty in everything and now I do. I see the beauty or find it in whatever I am surrounded by and my work reflects this in many ways.

Throughout my life, I have never missed an opportunity to embrace nature and its splendour. In fact, realising to what extent we have extinguished the beauty of the nature around us haunts and pains me. But in my work, I have chosen to find and focus on the beauty that is available to me all the time.

I sometimes show distorted reflections of trees and other greenery in the windows of my artworks as a representation of the beauty of nature that now exists within the beauty of our urban landscapes. I do acknowledge the constant change that is shared by both nature and our urban environment. Everything changes and that is in many ways the beauty of our world. Likewise, my perception of the environment is always changing and I constantly discover something new to portray in my paintings. I do not view my art works of urban architecture as an accurate depiction of structures, rather I pick and choose small segments of buildings and urban landscapes that I compose in an abstract manner and present as "Urban Portraits".
